The CMI Kidz are a group of young, energetic, boys and girls, ages 5-13, who support their local community at performances ranging from theater shows, festivals, and galas, to NBA and WNBA basketball games. Participants must have a love for dance, but no prior dance training is required to participate in this hip hop program!

The CMI Kidz Program has been in existence for seven years and is continually expanding and evolving. The program started with performances as the Junior Wizards Dance Team and one year later added the Mystic Mayhem Dance Team to its performing opportunities. Under the direction of London Myrick, the CMI Kidz are able to learn hip hop from experienced and talented choreographers, all of which are Capitol Movement, Inc. faculty, giving CMI Kidz the ability to grow quite easily into our Pre-Professional Company, Adult Company, and beyond. In 2012 our CMI Kidz performed for the Olympic USA Basketball Team exhibition in Washington, DC, where President Obama and Vice President Biden were in attendance!!

Participation Requirements

The CMI Kidz program is a year long program starting in the month of June. The tuition for each CMI Kidz session covers all classes, rehearsals, and choreography. The program also requires an additional fee to cover uniforms.

Dancers are required to the take Kidz Hip Hop classes from 6:30-7:30 pm on Friday nights in order to train and continue to improve their technique. Classes are followed by rehearsals from 7:30-8:30 pm, where dancers prepare for upcoming performances.

Classes and rehearsals are held at the Capitol Movement Studio, conveniently located near Capitol Hill and metro rail/bus transportation.

Note that returning members do not need to purchase new uniforms unless a new size is needed.

Stepping Stones

A number of kids who began their dance careers with the CMI Kidz have grown to become very talented and successful dancers! Here's what some are doing a couple years after their involvement:

  • Starr: Now a member of the Capitol Movement Dance Company, Starr has performed all over DC, MD, and VA, including the Kennedy Center and in front of George Stephanopoulos!
  • Demi: Also a Pre-Professional Company member, Demi got to dance with First Lady Michelle Obama and is a straight A student on top of all her dancing.
  • George: Another Pre-Professional Company member, George has worked with numerous national choreographers and will be dancing at Carnival in LA this summer!
