Community & Events

Since its inception, CMI has worked with many community organizations to fulfill its mission to build better lives through dance. CMI currently partners with DC Public Schools, Horizons at the Maret School, the Dance Institute of Washington, Dance Metro DC, the WNBA Washington Mystics, the NBA Washington Wizards, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton's office, and the Maya Angelou Foundation. Students in each of our outreach programs take part in ongoing dance instruction, which culminates in a performance for family and friends. During this time, students are exposed to many forms of dance, including hip hop, jazz, modern, and contemporary. They learn basic steps and practice a specially choreographed routine for their mini performance. Some students will even get to perform for an audience of 500+ peers at the Capitol Movement Project during our annual "Free Day of Dance" program and/or on the basketball court in front of up to 18,000 fans during an NBA or WNBA game.

The lessons learned in classes and rehearsals reach far beyond the new steps and tricks dancers encounter, regardless of the dancer's age. Our dance programs build confidence, stress teamwork, teach commitment and discipline, and open doors to dreams.
