Each year, Capitol Movement, Inc. provides 3-5 dancers, who demonstrate financial need and exceptional skills, with up to $3,000 to cover the tuition expenses of elite university and studio programs across the country such as The Debbie Allen Dance Academy, University of the Arts, and the Boston Ballet.
CMI also provides program tuition scholarships for young dancers to participate in its Pre-Professional Company and the CMI Kidz. Currently, there are three full scholarship participants in the Pre-Professional Program. This is 10% of the total program participants.
Since October 2006, CMI has given more than $20,000.00 in monetary scholarships to eligible dancers. It has also granted program scholarships to 60 dancers to participate in CMI programs free of charge. Full scholarships are made available to approximately 20% of youth program participants.
Congratulations to our Program Scholarship recipients for 2016, we wish you the best in your dance journey!

The organization uses the following as criteria for selecting scholarship awards: financial need, written essay, attendance at company class or dance class, determination, and dance skills demonstrated during auditions. We will determine the number and amounts of scholarships based on the amount of money available and the number of qualified applicants.
Recipients of our scholarships are required to re-apply every year and to teach or assist (depending on age and experience) one to three dance choreography classes, camps and/or workshops. In addition, all award recipients will be required to maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher (if applicable) and attend 90 percent of their classes. Written reports must be submitted on a quarterly basis.
The organization's selection committee will include the Co-Executive and Assistant Directors of the organization and two invited professionals from the dance/entertainment community. The invitation will be offered by the Board of Directors of the organization.
The deadline to submit a scholarship application is June 2, 2017. Program scholarships are available for the CMI Kidz and Pre-Professional Companies. Please contact Nicole Klett regarding Pre-Professional Company scholarships or contact London Myrick regarding CMI Kidz scholarships.
We asked some of our scholarship recipients to reflect on how CMI's financial support has helped them. This is what they had to say:
"My CMI scholarship gave me the opportunity to dance with some of the best young dancers in the Washington Metropolitan area. That, along with working with some of the most talented choreographers around was an experience I was so happy to be able to be a part of. I would not have been able to do this without the scholarship."
— Michael – Attending Oklahoma City University's Performing Arts Program
"CMI's scholarship has directly helped me in dance by giving me the chance to study with the industries best. It took a mere possibility and turned it into the opportunity of a lifetime. Giving me this chance to improve on my technique and performance, CMI gave me a career."
— Derrick – Attended Broadway Dance Center Summer Internship in NYC
"I have been dancing with Capitol Movement for many years, and receiving a scholarship has helped me move forward in my upcoming dance career. By receiving a scholarship from Capitol Movement I have been able to study ballet in Philadelphia during the summer for the past five years. I am very grateful to Capitol Movement because they have given me the opportunity to pursue my dancing."
— Starr – Attended annual summer program with the Rock School for Dance Education
