Capitol Movement, Inc. is committed to providing quality dance training at a reasonable cost. With the latest trend to cut arts programming in schools, it has become especially imperative that we nurture our young, budding artists beyond the standard classroom. At CMI we offer multiple opportunities to inspire the next generation of dancers including weekly studio dance classes, CMI Kidz, the Pre-Professional Company, free "Day of Dance" for Public School kids, summer camps, scholarships, and ticket donations for underserved children.
The Capitol Movement Pre-Professional Company is comprised of versatile dancers, ages 11-17, who aspire to become professional dancers. Under the direction of Nicole Klett, they train in hip hop, contemporary, jazz, lyrical, and tap, preparing for performances and the next steps in their careers. Proving that dance is alive in DC, our talented young dancers continually captivate packed crowds with energy, charisma, power, and sheer talent.
The CMI Kidz Program develops young performers,
ages 5-13, who demonstrate personality, ability, and enthusiasm, to follow basic hip hop choreography and learn dance technique. Under the direction of London Myrick, boys and girls in these programs support their local community at performances ranging from theater shows, festivals, and galas, to NBA and WNBA basketball games. Participants must have a love for dance, but no prior dance training is required to participate in this hip hop dance program!
When we asked some of our Pre-Professional Company family why they choose to dance with CMI, this is what some of them had to say:
"George has been a dancer with Capitol Movement for many years. He started out as a member of the Junior Washington Wizards Dance Team, then CMI Kidz, and this past year he was selected to be a member of the CMI Pre-Professional Company. This has been his most rewarding dance experience so far. I always thought he was good at dance, that this was a great hobby for him. He is also very active in sports at his high school and is an honor student. So dance helped keep him busy. Since George has joined the CMI Pre- Pro Company, his outlook on dance has completely changed. This is no longer a hobby for him. He lives, eats, and breathes dance. Because of CMI, he has had the chance for work with some top level choreographers in the industry and has been elevated to a new standard in his dancing. He now aspires to be a professional dancer and hopefully one day a choreographer like the ones he’s had the chance to work with, because of CMI."
-Alexis Marcos, Mother of George
"I have been with Capitol Movement since the 2nd Annual Capitol Movement Project. Since then I have danced in nearly every program CMI offers and have even been given the chance to choreograph on my peers in the Pre-Professional Company. I am honored that I have had the opportunity to dance with such amazing people at such a young age. I feel that I have grown immensely; not just in dance, but maturity as well, and I am grateful to Capitol Movement for the support and training along the way."
-Starr D-W, Capitol Movement Dance Company Artist
Our CMI youth dancers have gone on to receive college scholarships in dance to the University of the Arts, University of Maryland-Baltimore Campus (UMBC), Virginia Commonwealth (VCU), The Rock Ballet School, Alvin Ailey School of Dance, Oklahoma City University, Shenandoah Conservatory and more.
