Our Story

Capitol Movement’s mission is to build better lives through dance. At Capitol Movement, Inc. (CMI) we have three primary objectives:

 

  1. Ensure excellence in our professional performance company.
  2. Develop and enhance the next generation of dancers through our Capitol Movement Studio, youth dance programs, outreach classes, and scholarship opportunities.
  3. Serve the communities of the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

2005-2006

WHEN IT ALL BEGAN!

  • Inaugural Capitol Movement Project March 2005 at Historic Lincoln Theatre
  • Capitol Movement directed the Washington Wizards Junior Dance Team until 2012, known as the Capitol Kids
  • Named as resident dance company for the Historic Lincoln Theatre
  • CMI Kicked off the first ever Capitol Movement Project Dance Workshop Series with Darrin Henson, Luam, Joseph Nontanovan, Thomas Ford and Adrain Bolton
  • Headliner at the National Body Rock Body Building Competition
  • Contracted Dancers for the Radio One 25th Anniversary Gala
2005-2006

2007

  • Capitol Movement directed the WNBA Mystics Mayhem Dance Team until 2012
  • Received first grant from NFL Retired Players
  • Held 2nd Annual Capitol Movement Project at the historic Lincoln Theatre
  • Hosted 1st Annual Capitol Movement Convention
2007

2008

  • Lead programming for DARE Dance program in DC schools
  • Main contributor to Dance/Metro DC initiative “Dance is the Answer”
  • Held 3rd Annual Capitol Movement Project Dance Concert and the Lisner Auditorium.
2008

2009

  • Opening Capitol Movement Studio in Washington, DC.
  • Held 4th Annual Capitol Movement Project Dance Concert at the historic Lincoln Theatre
2009

2010

  • CMI Kidz program was created to give young dancers year-round programming in the arts
  • Performed at the Alvin Ailey Studios in NYC for the APAP Convention
  • Performed at the Congressional Black Caucus Phoenix Awards Dinner where President Barack Obama was the Keynote speaker
  • Selected to be on the Performing Artist Roster by the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities from 2010-2013
  • Pre-Professional Company was founded and held its inaugural Movement of the People Dance Concert
2010

2011

  • Sold out Capitol Movement Project at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
  • Selected as finalist for the 2011 Dance/Metro DC Awards
  • CMI Alum and Scholarship recipient, Latonya Swann, won BET’s “Born to Dance” TV competition
  • Held 6th Annual Capitol Movement Project Dance Concert at the Sidney Harman Hall
2011

2012

  • First International Tour in partnership with Armed Forces Entertainment to perform for men, women, and families serving in the U.S Military overseas – traveled to Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Portugal, and Italy
  • Featured artist at DC’s Mayor’s Arts Awards
  • Founded The CMI Kidz company
  • 5th anniversary of CMI’s FREE Day of Dance, welcoming over 6,000 DC public school students and 100 senior citizens to date

  • Choreographed Gloria Estefan and Trisha Yearwood performance at the White House
  • Tour with Armed Forces Entertainment to Cuba and Puerto Rico
  • Held 8th Annual Capitol Movement Project Dance Concert at the Historic Lincoln Theatre

2014

  • Guest Halloween performance for Grand Opening at iPic Theater in Bethesda, MD
  • Headliner with 3 Doors Down at Americafest in Okinawa, Japan at Kadena Air Force Base
  • Tour with Armed Forces Entertainment to Italy and Turkey
  • Tinsel Town celebratory performance at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan
  • Scholarship recipient Starr Deemer-White accepted to the Joffrey School of Ballet
2014

2015

  • 10 year anniversary of building better lives through dance!
  • Freedom Tour in collaboration with Armed Forces Entertainment, touring Djibouti and Bahrain
2015

2016

  • Headline dancers for the DC Mayor’s Arts Awards
  • Feature performers on the Main ANA Stage at the Cherry Blossom Festival
  • Guest performers during DC Funk Parade
  • Performed in VelocityDC Dance Festival at the Shakespeare Theater in DC
  • Inaugural Capitol Movement Community Showcase show (Virtuoso)
  • Scholarship recipient Michael Hibbs graduated with a degree in Dance Performance from Oklahoma City University with multiple job opportunities upon graduation

  • Feature performers on The Kennedy Center Millennium Stage during Alvin Ailey pairing
  • Feature performers on the Main ANA Stage at the Cherry Blossom Festival
