About Us

Capitol Movement’s mission is to build better lives through dance. We provide programs and opportunities for all dancers, regardless of socioeconomic barriers, through outreach, scholarships, and a variety of community engagements.

A 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, Capitol Movement aims to make dance accessible and affordable in the DC metropolitan area. Utilizing traveling classrooms, we are able to provide quality dance education to schools and community partners in need of arts education programming.

The lessons learned in dance reach far beyond simply doing steps and tricks. All our programs build confidence, teamwork, commitment, and discipline. Together, we can all build better lives through dance.

Why CMI?! *a note from Co-Founder

Capitol Movement came from a vision Co-Founders Stephanie Jojokian and Amber Yancey had for dancers in DC, MD and VA. Build better lives through dance. We continue to do this through new opportunities, no boundaries to elite instruction, ever-green learning, challenges, mentorship and a network that is like family.

After serving 15 years, regrouping and rethinking Capitol Movement’s goals for its community was necessary. We needed recharging and to facilitate thoughtfulness during crazy times; and all with the same undying commitment. When we said we were going on demand and virtual, we did not realize the pandemic was headed our way. Over that year, Capitol Movement helped its young dancers in CMI Kidz stay connected to friends, to dance, to continued growth, accepting what we cannot control and support through love and dance. In this pandemic and through these young eyes we saw our GenerationNext. The future of dance, of leaders and of Capitol Movement. GenerationNext is all ages, sizes, shapes, colors, backgrounds and talents. Through dance and our thoughtful messages we share through dance, Capitol Movement looks to reboot, recharge and create the next WHY for CMI.

“Capitol Movement is one of my favorite companies to teach! I look forward to teaching them every year. The company is full of hard-working, respectful and talented dancers! Love you guys!”
